Facilitators & Depression economics

An article in Yes Magazine about what economic system people used during the great depression. In Oakland people would scavenge for broken stuff, fix it and exchange for other stuff. Facilitators or scouts would look for things, pass it to those who could fix it. They would then look for others who could provide services like dental work, medical work or haircuts. And they would help the coordination of flow of services and goods.

I see this system as perhaps being of use in a network of gift circles. There can be a network of facilitators that float around the different circles seeing what is needed and being provided for and also iniatiate the flow of stuff and services between circles.
