motivation in open collaborations

What is the motivation to work in open collaborations if there is no money paid to people putting in the work e.g as in Wikipedia, Burning Man, open source software etc…

Daniel Pink has written a cool new book called “Drive”. It describes experiments that show sometimes people will do more work when the motivation is intrinsic rather than extrinsic (e.g. money)
